When I saw…..I died.
You know the drill, this guy got it wrong, the arrow point is usually just out of shot.
In the ever increasingly desperate world of Internet junk we are being constantly bombarded with images like the one above. Everyone is clamouring for your attention and will resort to anything to get it, the images that once shocked us are now so commonplace that we are being desensitised to everything.
In the latest Jack Reacher novel, Make me, author Lee Child explores the seedy dark Web where all manner of excess is available.The existence of such a things is not a surprise to me even although it should be.
It was while looking at the random pictures at the foot of an article in a moment of distraction that I came across footage of New York from more than a century ago.
Many of the familiar landmarks are present and others are either under construction or not yet thought of. Even then it is a bustling metropolis. Not gridlocked with taxis and delivery trucks but with early cars and horse drawn carts.
What I loved about the footage was that in a time where camera technology was in its infancy nobody was really bothering with the camera. There weren’t the curious faces crowding around the lens with gormless expression and smiling waves. It was such a new thing that most people probably never even registered what was going on.
I loved that.
There was this one couple who were walking arm in arm down the street towards the camera, they were happy and oblivious, the wind suddenly caught her shoe length skirt and whipped it up to knee level. She was having a bit of difficulty for a moment but soon regained her dignity and they skipped past the camera, laughing together at the moment.
I think what I liked about it was the unpretentious nature of everyone in the presence of this alien device.
We cannot get that back.
I was required to skirt around a couple on an Edinburgh Street last weekend as they took up most of the walkway with their selfie stick, (auto correct wanted to put selfish stick in here and that is probably more appropriate). They were oblivious to all people around them as they captured a moment from sticks length.
Everyone in that video will be gone now. Perhaps some will be remembered, but most will be long forgotten.
The reason that two men were fighting is of no significance and yet seemed the most important thing at that moment. Thousands of the descendants of these people would die in the wars of the 20th century and they knew nothing of that then. People walking those streets would jump from buildings as the stock market collapsed a few short years later.
The snap shot of a different time with the benefit of of hindsight is both enlightening and sobering. None of us know what the next month will bring and yet we live as though nothing will ever change.
We need to widen out our vision from the distracting influences and realise that we are finite beings with a short time to inhabit this part of eternity.
