It’s beginning to….

14506964926661497686052Global warming is really starting to take it’s toll.

Personally I blame Bing Crosby, it wasn’t really his fault that his White Christmas song has been so enduringly popular.

That however doesn’t help as it has been playing along with all of the other favourites espousing the wonders of the white frozen water particles since mid November, “everywhere you go.”

Being a fairly small land mass in the Northern Atlantic means that we are subject to every changing wind and the attendant weather systems that they funnel our way. In my forty two years I can remember only three white Christmases. We tend to get early flurries in December and substantial accumulation in the months at the start of the year if we are getting any at all.

More normal for us is a fluctuating that can see the thermometer rise and fall by a dozen or more degrees from day to day. This makes for a great variety of clothing requirements even over the space of a week. It took me until a only a few years ago to realise why; this understanding of where we live and why the forces at play cause such fluctuations has really helped me not to get so annoyed with the weather,  which I have no control over anyway.

Most of my fellow inhabitants have never reached such a place of reconciliation, they look to the continental forecasters who can pinpoint changes to the nearest thirty minutes. I remember on a Canadian trip hearing the sharp suited meteorological gentleman confidently state that at 1:30 pm the sunshine would give way an hour of precipitation and by 3pm the sun would return.

He was almost exactly correct.

Our best forecasts are a guess.

Since October we have had snow forecast on three occasions, once was correct and the heaviest fall took everyone surprise as it was completely missed.

All of this is rather dull, a bit like the skies on the other side of the window of my Italian Deli where I have taken residence this morning. My plan to tick my way down the shopping list has faltered at the door of the coffee shop. The fat drops of cold rain successfully drained my Christmas gusto in the ten minute walk from home to kissing my wife off to work.

I don’t really have a pressing rush today anyway. This is the first full free day of my break from working and I have 2 more full days to work on the list.

I think by the time that I have reached the bottom of this second cup and finished typing any remaining retail desire will have departed entirely.

But that’s okay.

The self imposed pressure that I have inflicted upon myself for years is gradually diminishing in the control that it has over me. Even just recognising this is something that gives me a sense of happiness.

I am glad that I worked through my last holiday, it means that I am enjoying the fruit of those seeds today.

It would be fair to say that global warming doesn’t affect me in any way, everything changes given enough time…..look at me!
