Not at the moment.

When then?

My parents escaped to the Caribbean in early 1990 after securing employment from a random application.

Life had been difficult on many fronts and they saw an opportunity to just take some time out and do something entirely different. Nobody really understood why they were choosing this option but they went through all of the required procedures and inoculations and headed off into the unknown.

Life in the equatorial countries is not carried out at the same pace as we live.

The majority of the people that made up the staff within the organisation were of Jamaican origin. The staff of the shops were mostly locals, the employees of the stores that my dad was required to deal with to secure replacement parts for the various things that were his responsibility were also local.

This was as it should be.

Coming from an environment where everything was required to be done with maximum haste and efficiency they were met on regular occasions with a phrase that came to be a source of some consternation. For years after their return whenever he came across an individual or organisation that was unhurried or unharried by pressure he could be heard muttering,

“Soon come.”

Other nations say, “mañana”  but the idea is the same. At some indeterminate point in the near or distant future this will surely take place, when, is not ever going to be pin-pointed.

Neither of our cultures are totally correct with this. We need to be somewhere along a middle line. This was the problem on the island when two cultures collided, one expected a British efficiency and system of operation and the other appreciated the more relaxed and gentle approach to accomplishment and motivation.

Being the first day back after our Christmas break there exists a greatly reduced expectation within my work place today. Not everyone has returned today, even those who are present are not fully here. This attitude will probably persist until Friday with a certain amount of latitude from management.

Monday will be a different story.

The remaining three months of the financial year bring with them certain pressures that will exact themselves on everyone in our business to some degree. So the ‘soon come’ of this week must give way to the ‘now’ of next week or else targets will be missed.

Both my wife and myself have entered this year with something of a similar attitude. It was never discussed at any length or agreed upon together at any point. This just happens with us. We had allowed for a simpler existence last year to allow for my recovery from depression.

It was the correct decision to make.

In the grand scheme of eternity or of a life a year is nothing. But in another sense it can exact a huge change in our lives. We are different in so many ways from last January, that is good. The challenges we will be confronted with this year will be entirely different but the interesting thing for me is the way that we feel ready to embrace them in a way that 12 months ago would have seemed impossible.

A little Jamaican spirit in the last year has gone a long way to paving the path for a different walk this year.

It is essential that we understand the season in which we find ourselves in order to withstand the external pressure to perform. Conversely, when it is time to act, ‘soon come’ will just not be acceptable.
