Conversations that I have at 6:30 am are usually essential or random.
Mine today was the latter. There are people in my workplace who are topic specific; what I mean by this is that we only ever talk around certain subjects (never work related I may add). Today I was talking to Netflix guy, we have a mutual appreciation for the service that it offers and have a similar taste in viewing so invariably end up talking around that.
His wife had gone to Sweden for a few days with her sister and he had finished watching whatever it had been before she departed; this left him on the lookout for a recommendation to fill the empty hours after work. I had recently exhausted the supply of Narcos and was still reeling from the sudden and abrupt break in the story; and so it was he embarked, that evening, on the Pablo Escobar whirlwind.
Three episodes is quite enough for a ‘school night’ anyway, but given the subject matter it is about as much as a brain can comprehend. Had this not been a true story we would be struggling to make it up and to keep it believable; even with the knowledge that it is true and sanitised for television it is hardly conceivable that people lived in this way with such total disregard for all around them. It gave us a launch pad this morning as we talked from Colombia to Mexico and on into excess.
As a race we learn nothing!
That isn’t strictly true, we learn a lot. But we learn nothing from history with regards to profligate living. Men who brutally rise to power inexplicably forget that the trail of bodies and broken lives lying behind them will include them at some indeterminate juncture in the future, as the next usurper to the throne invariably rises.
Meanwhile, they pursue wealth and power like some locust swarm stripping a countryside bare as it sweeps through. The balance of power has largely moved around the Southern Americas and sattelite islands since the demise of Pablo, but the same misery still engulfs these nations and the downline that they supply.
Whether it is cocaine or any other drugs, and that includes power which is as much of an addiction as the white powder; the lateral fallout disseminates like a plague, destroying and consuming as it goes. It matters little if the linchpin has a white suite or a white collar, camouflage trousers or Saville row, the aim and result are inevitability the same. Get to the top and gather as much as you can, while you can.
Any ideology that destroys others to gain for itself, no matter which book or leader it claims as a guide, is ultimately deluded.
I am grateful that I am not in a position of great power in that sense; I do however have the same responsibility in the sphere that I do occupy. I know for a fact that I was a living embodiment of the title of this piece for a lot of last year. I would have crossed the road to avoid me (if that had been possible) on many days; we can make a lot of excuses for our behaviour and not face the reality of who we are becoming.
It is a fair assumption that few reading this plan a Pablo type strategy; but we can find those same destructive, self seeking and self serving traits rising in our marriages, families and businesses.
People are the most important part of our lives and we must value them immensely.
