Having sporty children in an interesting concept.

I spent most of my childhood charging around our towns and villages to all hours on whatever form of transport was available.

My bike was the preferred option unless we were on a cross country mission that involved fences and streams. It never occurred to us that walking for miles to play beside a stream for hours was exercise, it was just fun.

Most of our transport options involved the expenditure of great amounts of energy. Asking parents for a ride in the car just never crossed our minds. We would cycle, run, go on scooters or virtually anything that rolled slid or moved.

Calories, pedometers, and any other vague recording of food and exercise never once entered my head. I always came second in flat races to my friend who just nosed in before me every time. We never practiced for the annual competition, it was just a case of turning up and running as best you could.

Sitting here tonight in the local athletics stadium that has become our second home this last few months I am surrounded by a lot of spandex.

I have never owned any spandex!

This is not an ambition that I secretly harbor deep within. If I was never to wear anything skin tight and clinging to my limbs it wouldn’t upset me greatly.

There is a very clear distinction amongst the parental attendants that frequent this place. There are the sporty parents that say “guys” a lot and wear clothing that is suitable to the surroundings. Then there are those of us who sit in the cafe, well away from the smelly end of the building; we read and drink coffee on the leather sofas idling away the time until our offspring are done with their unenforced exercises.

Some of us café dwellers to try to support our kids by wearing a branded hooded top or running shoes, these shoes will never move faster than a medium walk and the top will not ever be removed became of overheating caused by exertion.

I am not that dad, my support extends to and ends with the delivery of the athletes at the correct time. Hoods annoy me and I would always choose a hat over one any day of the week. I have never succumbed to the pressure of conformity. There is a contrariness in me that has always chosen my own path.

I like that my children are applying themselves to this discipline at this age, it is a positive attribute to develop in life and they actually enjoy it.

They may never be world record holders in track events but as a good friend reminded me, they don’t need to be.

Any goal that encourages them to train,  be disciplined in food and drink and strive to achieve a win at whatever level of competition is a tremendous foundation to build the rest of their lives upon.

For us as parents, it is a small sacrifice to sit and drink coffee for ninety minutes while relaxing on a sofa. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest that I am not the coach or steward on the field. Those that enjoy it are way more enthusiastic than I would ever be!
