The elephant in the room.

mobile-hank04-shadowJust because we deny it’s existence does not remove it’s presence.

We all know that there is something terribly wrong in the world,  it is undeniably there drip dripping, far enough away to be distant but near enough to avoid being ignored. So often it creeps in over our walls like the steady trickle of a rising flood.

We give it many names in an attempt to rationalise what it may be.

Some call it reincarnation, like the faint watermark of another time and place that is always just outwith our grasp. Others blame it on aliens who have left the seeds of a civilisation and departed when once it was established, they slip back occasionally for a casual observation or sexual encounter of the third kind.

We push and strive, filling our lives with everything conceivable to mask the ache, from drugs to porn, careers to sports and a million other things, but it keeps popping back out. Like that damp wall which has been painted a hundred times over and the stain just keeps re-appearing, we need to identify the source of the problem.

Far away in a dark forgotten place there is a faint flickering hope, we deny its presence as much as that of the ache which we all feel, but the entire creation is subject to futility in order that the hope of deliverance will be present and still seen.

Like the lamp in the corner of a Narnian forest that is the reminder of a reality outwith all that we currently know. It silently shines in every generation for those who will admit the ache and go look for the light. Finding that lamp returns us to true life that we must live, away from the fantasy that distracts us from the real, from the harshness of all that we try so hard to avoid and yet never can.

We all seek out our own Narnia.

The problem is of course that we cannot stay there, the return to reality inevitably looms large over us and must be faced.

The question we must answer is, will we face it alone, or will our carefully thought through hopes be sufficient to help us in the day to day struggles which must arrive?

What is ultimately certain is that the elephant is not leaving on its own.

The door is too small!

The whole thing needs a different answer, but what happens when the answer isn’t one that we want to hear?

Will we reject it in favour of the continuation of the ache?
