As previously stated, I am not ever going to be a physics expert; I do, however, maintain an interest in the subject and find myself dipping in and out for purely personal and not work related reasons.
Take this morning for example, I had wakened from a rather infuriating dream where I was in a group discussion with other Christians and had found myself defending the Bible to them. The discussion had remained calm and I was in my element; my first reaction in real life situations like this is to relax and enjoy the ride, something deep inside announces “game on!”
Today the waking thought was of Newton’s third law:
“For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.”
This generation that I am part of, and the upcoming generation have actively and deliberately avoided negative situations. The internet is awash with quotes about extracting ourselves from places and people who rub us up the wrong way; obviously abusive relationships are different, but to just leave when the going is a little tough or opposing would have led me to a very hermit like existence. Naturally there are always exceptions to every sweeping statement and thankfully individuals will always rise to challenges or Red Bull TV wouldn’t exist.
Personally speaking I have never been a fighter; in my youth I was involved in a few scuffles that resembled two tired boxers with arms entangled.
I was a much better runner than a fighter.
The one time that escaped this lifetime ruling was after many months of antagonism and threatening from a school boy who inexplicably despised me, I jumped on my bike and chased him for about a mile and when he stopped I unleashed a right hook that Mr Tyson would have commended. Needless to say after that bad boy connecting with his jaw he never threatened me again; the thing that surprised me was that he never even responded, he just skulked away.
Our friend Isaac Newton was on to something; I hadn’t realised the truth of this at the time, in spite of experiencing it on many occasions. The car that propelled me through the air as I met with the front window, breaking it with my head confirmed his third law; the ground that tore the ligaments of my left leg as I slammed into it confirmed it, and my aching knuckles that connected with young Peter’s face confirmed that opposite reactions can hurt.
The truth that we are allowing to slowly lose a hold in our pampered lives is that adversity is actually good for us. The polished suits of the TV preachers have dulled the ears of many church goers; the sugar coated TV shows and happy ending movies have removed the need to stand and fight for our marriages and children even if it looks and feels tough. Parents are superfluous in kids TV shows and dads are the objects of ridicule in the sitcoms.
The really rich people that we meet in life are those individuals who have met with the truth of Newton’s third law and exerted a force greater than the one opposing them. As I sit in on this comfortable couch this morning it is actively opposing me; but that is alright because it is designed to hold me from dropping through it and the force which it exerts is enough to support me but also cushion me in a way that is acceptable.
I would not be writing this piece today had I not come through a tremendously difficult and dark time last year that sparked a desire to express my thoughts in the only way available to me at the time. Speaking seemed to be beyond me in those months and writing gave me a way to express myself.
I will always hate the darkness, but it gave me a gift because my mind was able to exert a reaction in defiance.
