It was a covers over the head and cuddle a soft leg kind of morning today.
The forecasts had warned us with great enthusiasm of the impending storm, we had rapidly progressed to defcom amber for severity and medium anxiety.
The “be prepared’ song from the film Hoodwinked tends to begin playing in my mind when these serious faced warnings are issued. Let’s be honest, if we are going to give destructive storms cuddly granny names we may as well have the goat sing this:
In my mind storms should have scary names like God zillion, or Destructor, or something equally memorable. We need to take it from the meteorological departments who are not renowned for creativity and hand the naming of storms to science fiction writers.
Filling out insurance claims would be way more interesting if you could say that it was TERRIDACTOR that ripped the roof from my house. It sounds infinitely better than storm Gertrude. Seriously? A 90 mile an hour whirling granny with blue hair and no teeth sent your roof tiles into the next county? I think not Mr Jones.
At 6:45 am it arrived.
The roof was rumbling and the rain was going sideways South to North, which would be my preference since that is the way our property runs. So all weather coming from that direction causes minimal damage, which is always a bonus.
The last big wind had removed a ‘temporary fix’ that I had applied some years ago and forgotten about. This tends to be the case when such fixes are being successful for longer than first imagined. The sheet of clear plastic had vanished with the wind in early December, I presume it has a new home in Oz where it is protecting a window in the Emerald city now.
So this morning when the rain began lashing our roof, the gap that is now exposed was letting water drip down into our hallway. It wasn’t a torrent, it doesn’t need to be. There is something that just inherently wrong with rain water being inside the house. We fight drastically to avoid this like it is boiling acid dripping into our inner sanctum, it is just water!
That was the point at which I retreated back to the cosy bed and warm safety where all was well.
I have never been a fearful person, I did get concerned with things but I wasn’t overly worried by much. In the last twenty years we have taken on some pretty huge challenges and rolled with mostly everything that came our way.
When our house was broken into we never really got too upset, it was just stuff, we were all safe and when the door was fixed it was back to life as normal.
Since coming out of my time of depression last year there has been an unexpected hangover.
I seem to have very little resilience against boat rocking. The slightest thing seems to upset the equilibrium and internal balance, it is hugely annoying! This is not who I am or have been and I don’t like it.
I know that it is going to be rectified in time, but that confidence which I once possessed has been stolen. The spiritual part of me knows that it is necessary to remove self confidence in order to have that God given confidence, but this middle bit is a little disconcerting.
