Veritas

It says a lot about the culture of ancient Rome that they had a goddess of truth who was so elusive that she hid at the bottom of a holy well.

Such was the pervading rot intrinsic within their political and religious society that truth was something which was so hard to locate. Thankfully we live in a more enlightened age, where politicians and the religious hierarchy would never dream of subterfuge or painting over the cracks within the higher echelons of our society.

The irony of it all is that around the world schools and universities have taken this Latin word for their moto; the very establishments that produce the future law makers and leaders have ingrained into their literature and stationary, school ties and logos the foundation of a stable country.  Quite what it is that occurs when once these highly educated students cease to be in the company of such high ideals will remain as elusive as the goddess herself.

The moral scruples that are sworn to and declared as the compass gently ebb away with the grinding glacial pressure of big business and bureaucratic red tape continually poured on the heads of the once idealistic ‘individuals.’ Few are those today with the doggèd determination of a Wilberforce, who fought on to the very end to abolish the wretchedness of slavery from his shores.

It is little wonder then that the dissemination of deceit filters ever downward; fueled as it is by the relentlessly obsessing media for a story or soundbite at any cost. The stakes have ranked up immeasurably with free online media producing scores of instant videos with little or no verification of authenticity required. How can mainstream media compete with doctored clips and old footage? By doing the same of course.

Truth will never again get in the way of a good story!

I hear the echo through the centuries of two citizens of Rome itself:

“Quid est veritas”  what is truth? Pilate,  Governor of Jerusalem.

“In vino veritas” In wine there is truth.  Pliny the Elder.

At every level of society both of these statements still apply to us today; you give a liberal supply of alcohol to someone and sooner or later the truth will out. Something contained in those bottles reduces inhibitions and the decorum which ordinarily would restrain a tongue from divulging the innermost thoughts.

Pilate was confronted with an anomaly of a person, he desperately tried to unpick the complexities of the situation before him but was instead met with more questions than answers. This man claimed to represent ultimate truth and yet declined the help offered to him.

In the search for truth we are in a more befuddled quagmire than ever before in history. Voices call out from every side and a thousand more with the claims of veritas; but who do we believe?

I have made my choice.

The difficulty that is to be overcome is not just in finding the truth, but when once you believe that you have, throwing your all into it.

It is my firm belief that no earnest seeker of the truth will be left bobbing in an ocean of questions;  the answer is there for all to find, the question you must first ask yourself is:

“Do I really want the answer?”
