What makes a good weekend?

Luke-Aikins

When we were children the first couple of hours at school were occupied with writing our ‘news.’

Even just saying that conjures up the smell of the green lined jotter. We had to write at least a page and a half describing what we had done over the weekend and illustrate it with a coloured sketch. Choosing one thing was always a challenge as we tended to have a lot of activities crammed into those few days.

As an adult on a Monday morning we go through a similar download, it is usually the first question that faces me from work colleagues regarding my free time. Thankfully these days there is no coloured sketch required as my free drawing isn’t too hot.

I loved the adventures of childhood. Adult ones are slightly more tame. I will never be an adrenaline junkie like the sky diving guy with no parachute on Saturday. But compared to some of those of my age we seem to do okay.

Having three whole days to play with every week does make for a much better balance of life. Effectively the weekend begins on a Thursday night and relaxation can begin.

Had this been a year ago and I was facing the impending 72 hours there would not have been the same level of anticipation. Instead there would have been dread, fear and very probably a panic attack. So while it is good to stop and recognise the progress of this last year it is also important to keep pushing to get back to place that still now seems so distant.

Friends featured large in the days just past.

Curries, coffees, meals, walks, church and more coffee brought us together with a huge variety of individuals and couples. Conversation was as varied as the faces, the age range was wide and the topics discussed all encompassing in their scope.

In the midst of it all we carved out an afternoon on the beach as a family, we barbecued some burgers and enjoyed the sunny sea air once more. I would be lying if I said we all got on swimmingly the whole time but living in close proximity to two emerging adults and one slightly sub-par one (me) doesn’t always make for spring scented harmony.

In spite of it all we went bed last night tired but happy. As our guests left after ten to make their way home we closed up the shutters on another weekend and waited comatose for the turning numbers to trigger the alarm, it was with a sense of fulfilment. Not in a box ticking kind of way, but with the happy feeling of hours well spent.

If I was to ask you the question of the title each would respond in very diverse ways, for me the answer lies not in money spent, goods obtained or planes leapt from. No, the thing that made our weekend so enjoyable was people.

For me to even have a glimmer of this back after such a dearth of desire to be around others is something of a triumph and it is a plant to be watered.
