When the music fades

It is a funny kind of no man’s land that I presently occupy.

There has been a whole month of Christmas music, both on the household streaming service and on the Smooth Christmas radio station. For four weeks this dedicated channel appears on our digital radio and supplies us with 24 hours of jollity along a seasonal line.

Post Christmas day it just doesn’t feel right to be having the usual carols and music.

We usually use this week to catch up on friends and our tree sees quite a number of visitors who get to appreciate the creative skills of my better half. Those who visit prior to the big day are serenaded quietly with suitable tunes and this seems acceptable, however, those who arrive post parcels are met with silence on the musical front.

This vacuum between the festivities of Christmas and the celebrations of New year have no soundtrack.

My entire music collection resides in three places. I have a hard drive that stores every song that I own, I have an old phone that I use as an mp3 player and my current phone which has a selection of rotating tracks. Outside of this there are a smattering of cds that have survived the mistreatment of many years.

It is always interesting in mid summer when I put my music on to random shuffle to have Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra pipe up with a Christmas tune. Sometimes I let them roll on and other times my limited patience hastily skips on to the next track.

As I have previously stated, the enjoyment of this seasonal music has come at a very slow progress. So to be sitting in our home with the tree in full decorative state and no desire to accompany it audibly feels a little odd.

Driving home, not for Christmas, but after the event last night it was too weird to have the Christmas music playing. On the way down our excitement was heightened by listening to Frank and Michael crooning away with a car full of packages and food. But the return journey was not the same.

Some of those items were in the car,  but naked now. The wrapping paper was in the recycle bin, the food and drink was making it’s way through our digestive tract and to apply the same music seemed, somehow, crass.

So apart from the random selection of our devices the music of the past month will once again be silenced for the next eleven. Only after Halloween of 2016 will it once again resurface to bring the memories of decades of Christmas past and the prospect of the current year.

Between now and then thousands of songs will be written of every genré and taste, but as the season approaches today’s crop of recording artists will sing again the songs of old with a new arrangement.

Because we are funny like that!

Whether in church or in chart we want our Christmas music to be familiar.

It takes a brave soul to write a new song for the season, and an even more fortunate one to have it accepted.
