You say man flu I say head cold!

Sickness is a very subjective subject.

I can go through entire years without as much as a headache and yet at other times there are illnesses aplenty.

In our family there are quite a few medical professionals,  most of them have gone down the specialist route and have dedicated years of study to their chosen speciality. This has proved extremely useful as our medical system has waiting times to see certain consultants; we are not above using personal relationships to advance through these lists like a fast pass at Disney land.

I have a great deal of respect for specialists in any field, not just medicine. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and dedication to step from the general knowledge to focus our attention on to one specific discipline. This narrows our field dramatically but it also can result in a person becoming an authority in their chosen field of study.

We have one medical General (or medical) practitioner  in the family. His job requires him to listen, assess and diagnose thousands of symptoms and illnesses in a matter of moments dozens of times every day. This requires an inordinate amount of knowledge to be stored into one head during the seven years of study. A lifetime of learning then follows as symptoms are presented to him person after person, day after day which would be baffling to the average person.

Clearly there are seasonal disorders that surface year on year and diseases that have common symptoms or that present in the same manner regardless of the host. However there are also countless other maladys that appear initially to be one thing but later prove to be vastly different from the first diagnosis. It is amazing to me that there are so few mistakes given the complexity of this body which we inhabit.

Personally I have always been much more of a general practitioner throughout my life. I have been privileged to be involved in many different vocations, gathered a good variety skills and enjoyed the expediting of most of them.

There are certain subjects that I have specialised in and given many of my best years to sharpening my knowledge of  them. This has proven invaluable when it came to the projects that I have found myself being part of in subsequent years. Also there are lessons that were learned in the midst of circumstances that I would rather have avoided.

I have found every area of life to be filled with people who react in ways that you could never predict. Whether faced with a challenge at work, home or family or with a illness in whatever degree.

No two people will react to a sickness in the same way, that is why the term “man flu” arose within the female vocabulary. It is true that a portion of my gender buckle and blub when they get the sniffles, expecting to be run after hand and foot. But it is also the case that some of us refuse to sit down when that is clearly what our bodies require.

My journey through a major operation and more recently a severe bout of depression has brought me to the understanding that my body speaks if I will but listen.

It can be extremely difficult to allow others this degree of latitude in whatever area; I have been very fortunate to have received it.
