Dare to challenge.

Homer famously said, “It is written down, it must be true!”

That was Homer Simpson by the way, not the literary genius of Ilyad fame.

I know what it was to be raised in an atmosphere of authority; my parents were tight disciplinairans and ran a house where rules were clear and consequences were expected. This did me no harm as I always knew what was expected within that environment; being a model child it came naturally to me to follow explicitly every expectation and joyfully adhere to every limitation and boundary.

And then I woke up!

Rules and boundaries are a challenge for every child, there are only a miniscule number who don’t ever push a limit or have a parent at their wits end in frustration at some point. Most households with children could replay the same statements on a daily basis, these statements will change as the children grow but by and large the repetition goes on at the same pace.

What baffles me is that by the time we have gone through the education system the majority of people just stop asking questions. It’s as if we had only so much effort pre-loaded and by age 24 it is totally depleted and we just settle down to existing. This, of course, pleases the media and government greatly; we cannot have a population of people who constantly challenge and question everything that they are told, and so stability is established.

In general conversation with most people you will hear statistics quoted as facts, news items repeated as if God Himself had read the headlines and medical studies which contradict each other on a daily basis trotted out because it was in a tabloid newspaper, on Twitter, or reposted on Facebook.

People are just unaccustomed to questioning and challenging what those in authority tell them. Stick a white coat and some glasses on a person, give them a tablet and their word is unassailable. Equally if you meet someone with a hard hat and a high visibility jacket in the street you don’t question their authority, especially if they have glasses and a neck tie.

When I was an apprentice I discovered this for myself; I was at college studying various aspects of vehicular design and repair and was out with some of my friends from church. The question arose as to why VW cars had a zip on their headrests, I replied with complete authority that ykk, who manufactured said items had secured a massive contract with VW. This information was completely fabricated on the spot but because of my alleged knowledge and confidence in delivery it was accepted without demur.

Throughout my life I have researched and studied a multitude of subjects; with the advent of Google it has become increasingly easy to find out almost anything that you may wonder about. Last week I spent an hour or two online in Mobile, Alabama for no other reason than Elvis mentioned it in a song and it piqued my curiosity. The incredible thing is that most of just don’t; we rely on the intravenous drip of information to be fed into us from a plethora of sources without ever stopping to question.

A whole generation of us have just stopped learning beyond the basic surface level.

The average Christian couldn’t tell you why they go to church or answer the simplest of questions about their faith. Sadly this is true of most religious people of all faiths as much of the youth turns to secularisation and capitalism to fill the hole that is gaping within.

We need to get our “WHY” back!

Challenge everything and see if it simply a dogma that you have accepted or is actually something that you can build your life upon.
