Sitting centuries ago in the public arena of his day a poet was observing the people passing by; poets have a philosophical bent that lends itself to objective thought. From Asaph to Dylan (Thomas or Bob) and on to Billie Joe Armstrong of Green day, critical thinkers have long tried to unpick the complexities and seeming inconsistencies of the society in which they find themselves. Many of these men have searched for the answers to the same questions and many have failed to come to a satisfactory conclusion.
Reading the words of Asaph today with the thought of Pablo Escobar still fresh in my mind from last night’s Netflix session (unlike the man himself I exercised great restraint and limited myself to only one episode) it is glaringly apparent that 4 millennia have altered nothing in the behaviour and ill divided-ness of human experience. The burning question, then, is why do the wicked prosper while the hard working people suffer and strive to get by? Why do such men (and women) achieve notoriety, fame and incredible wealth while we look on in bewildered wonder at their greased pig-like ability to avoid all consequences?
Those who rise to the places of power do so at great personal cost, I have found that such people are willing to forego much of the easy comfort that most take for granted. It is true that some are born to privilege but many take the difficult road of hard work, long hours and personal sacrifice. The second group are those innovative minds who invented, started businesses or used their mental acumen for criminal enterprise. The line is incredibly blurry between genius and malevolence; there is many a cell around the world occupied by a high IQ.
What separates me from this group of individuals is their ability to forge ahead like an ice breaking ship, leaving a trail of broken hearts, lives and bodies like so many pieces of ice drifting on the Arctic sea. The last century has been little different from the many before it; however the pile of corpses would be considerably higher thanks to the addition of mechanised killing. That coldness is thankfully absent from the highest percentage of humanity but is necessary to achieve what so many of the revolutionary characters we could name accomplished in their brutal lives.
The final group are a rag-tag bunch of conveyer belt faces. The entertainment industry which exploded out of a Los Angeles neighbourhood a century ago has spawned a succession of brief careers and a few extended ones. The music industry has a similar record of changing faces according to musical taste and fashion.
In times past the Greeks had their hypocrites (actors) Romans had their colosseum, the travelling minstrels entertained the villages and the kings had their jesters; we have always loved to be entertained. With mass media we have made it a big money industry whereas in ancient times it could result in an early demise if you offended. I wondered at the presence of musicians and actors at the White house until remembering that the jester had the ear of the king.
If we can learn anything from reading ancient texts it must be that life was always a struggle for the majority; the Roman senator enjoyed his steaming bath on the back of a 1000 slaves stoking the fire below and few slaves ever achieved their freedom. But remember this the next time you envy the globe trotting celebrities or silently judge the power hungry jihadi beheading a captive:
