Same crap, different day!

With surprising regularity this is the answer which comes my way in answer to a: “how are you doing today?”

It is far too easy to let ourselves fall into that mindset with the hum drum routine of work; even if your job involves you doing something different every day there are certain aspects of living life that are just routinely the same.

People stuck in offices long to have the freedom of being outside, that’s okay when the sun is shining but those required to stand in the pouring rain long for the warmth of an office job.

Routine is an essential part of what makes this world tick along, without it we would cease to function. We never get mad at the sun for appearing over our horizon every morning or the tides silently ebbing and flowing; the changing seasons are essential for the food producing cycle and it is our impatience and salacious consumption that demands every type of fruit and vegetable to be available all year round.

One of the reasons that I began writing this blog was to engage my brain into a new thought process. My paid employment demands very little of my mental acuity but extensive amounts of my time; that is a combination which would result in disaster if I wasn’t mentally engaged in other thoughts which are bigger than my routine. Now I am the first to admit that the hamster wheel of work, eat, sleep, bills and repeat is wearing; we have created a prison of drudge for ourselves with the financial commitments which we aspire to and sign up for. The few brave souls who step out of the rat race are generally looked upon with great disdain and a measure of pity that they choose to exist without the trappings that we all usually chase.

Society as we have inherited it has become an urban division of astounding distinctions; the chaotic future predicted in 80’s movies never transpired as they pictured it because they couldn’t foresee the technology that would exist. We have lower petty to middling crime rates and cleaner streets but complete governmental surveillance over our mobile devices. This still doesn’t avert crime but for the average Truman the seedy underworld and terrorist network is something that I only know about through box sets.

Frankly, I can live with that!

I don’t need all of that fear and unnecessary pressure in my head, the people who choose to engage and protect me from these plots that never see the light of day can have my taxes with gratitude.

Few of us consider this parallel world going on as we complain about the mundanity of our existence.  But I roundly refute the notion that every day is just a groundhog repeat of the last.

Today, I will have some of the same conversations that I always have with my wife and kids and colleagues; but today I will also have conversations with people that will explore new subjects, reveal their plans for their free time and perhaps learn what they are interested in. This morning in a chance encounter I spluttered with laughter as a tension moment broke over a perceived monumental error that proved to be something non existent.

No two days are the same, live this one!
