A simple morning brew was all it took to get the wheels in motion once more.
My coffee drinking in the morning is a considered affair, I don’t go to the disgusting vending machine because it produces something that conjures up a flavour akin to a substance from a chuck wagon in the middle of a cow drive. Not pleasant.
Just because I am at work and not in front of my new espresso machine I don’t accept that I need to endure poor coffee. For some people the morning cup has a necessity factor to kick start life, that isn’t me, I just enjoy the taste and look forward to it immensely.
In our local supermarket there is a system of producing a good healthy filter coffee that is totally simple and uncomplicated. I congratulate the mind who came up with this design. In short, you have a plastic cup with a built in filter compartment which contains coffee grounds. You place the cup atop your own cup and let the water run through thus producing a beverage of considerably better than average quality.
Of late I have been finding the flavour somewhat lacking as I use disposable plastic cups which are expertly liberated from the water cooler. This morning, however, I used a paper cup and the difference in flavour was immediately and remarkably different.
This got me to thinking about why we use the cups we do, my barrista wife couldn’t shed any light on the origins or reasons. I read an enlightening article as to the origins of the paper cup and they are not as environmental as you may assume. Basically Starbucks sought a cup to suit their lid and paper won.
None of this answers my original thought about the science behind the coffee cup, ultimately it never came down to science, it was merely convenience. People wanted a hot drink while in motion and a receptacle was provided to make it possible, simple supply and demand, the connoisseur factor just wasn’t part of it.
My little musing for today has no real industry backing, but the fact remains for me today that paper is better than plastic in a taste test by a country mile.
So who cares?
Well for my money it has always been the case that the cup does matter!
The person who delivers the message is hugely important. We had a chef exec who was the most capable of businessmen, he ran a good tight ship and did it well, but he was utterly rubbish at public speaking. His predecessor and successor were not as equipped in a business sense as he was but could convince everyone that they were.
It matters a lot that we are in the correct place, just because we possess the facts is not a guarantee that we are the ones to deliver them. I have been forced to recognise at times that I had no voice in certain situations, it wouldn’t have mattered how well or eloquently that I had spoken, I was not the man.
Equally on other occasions a few choice words were all that it took to drastically alter a situation.
We cannot be all things to all people but we can be the correct person at the correct time that makes a difference.
