Believe it

You can do it!

I am a third generation house renovator.

My grandfather bought two cottages and made them into a family home at a time when that was completely unknown; he added extentions and built outhouses and a garage, my gran still lives in that house and has done for 60 plus years.

My dad bought and renovated a fisherman’s cottage; he moved walls, built on a large kitchen and generally rebuilt the interior. He has since repeated this process all over again.

My wife and I found an old house which was ridiculously large and being used as a business; they had systematically destroyed much of the plaster work and totally neglected most of the building and garden. We fell for this old pile of stones in a big way, and in spite of the voices of dissent we jumped headlong and have restored it to a modern version of its old self.

“How hard can it be?”

My wife says she will put that on my gravestone.

It is a phrase that escapes my lips involuntarily whenever confronted with a new challenge.

In the days before YouTube I would Google things that I had never attempted, I would trawl the sea of local knowledge among friends and rapaciously gather up all the required information before diving into the unknown. We had many worriers circling with their negative feedback, but youthful enthusiasm and a ridiculous self belief drove us forward.

Prince Edward in the movie Enchanted is asked by his man servant if he likes himself; to which he flippantly replies, “what’s not to like?” Never did it enter his head that he couldn’t do something he set out to do, failure simply wasn’t an option. That, of course, isn’t real life; we have encountered many setbacks and failures over the years but that belief in what a person can achieve is something that I hope never to lose.

It would be an understatement to say that my confidence took a pounding last year, it isn’t a bad thing that reduces over confidence and points us towards a more humble attitude. However, by the grace of God we are still going forward and learning new ways of being; my wife always used to remind me that I am a human being, not a human doing!

I suppose at the core of my thoughts today is this idea that some people just like who they are. They may not go around declaring it or trumpeting their greatness, but they seem to have that quiet assurance of their own abilities; conversely, we meet far too many others who continually doubt, second guess themselves and major on the negative traits within themselves.

Genetics may have a lot to do with this, but I have seen people who were painfully shy as children become outspoken advocates for a something they are passionate about.

“I am that soldier!”

It is possible to be passionate.

I don’t subscribe to the notion that some can never be stirred to passion. The most boring, quiet people become Vikings when they sit in the sports stadiums around the world.

The biggest problem we face today is finding something worthy of our energy and passion; we must start with a mini vision, investigate your own life and see what aggravates you and do something to change it. Even if it begins with the cups in your cupboard, start small and get the mindset that change is possible and achievable.

On this, another Monday, sit high in the saddle and believe for more.

  1. Hey there would you mind letting me know which
hosting company you’re utilizing? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different
browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker then most.
Can you suggest a good web hosting provider at a fair price?

    Thanks, I appreciate it!

  2. I’m not sure exactly why but this site is loading
extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having
this issue or is it a problem on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem
    still exists.

  3. I’ve been browsing on-line more than 3 hours lately, yet I by no means found any attention-grabbing article like
yours. It is pretty price enough for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made good content material as you probably did, the internet
shall be much more helpful than ever before.

  4. I’ve been surfing on-line greater than three
hours these days, yet I never found any fascinating
article like yours. It’s beautiful value sufficient for me.
In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made
good content material as you did, the internet will be much more helpful than ever before.

  5. You are so cool! I don’t believe I’ve read anything like
this before. So great to discover another person with genuine
thoughts on this subject matter. Really.. thank you for starting this up.
This website is one thing that’s needed on the internet,
    someone with some originality!

  6. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell
and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear
and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off
topic but I had to tell someone!
