Time to get real

its-time-to-get-real1_0Even writing that title makes me cringe in certain areas of my life.

It occurs to me that with longevity comes complacency.

100 years ago life expectancy was pretty low. Health care was a real gamble and had the very strong possibility of being the thing that killed you. We cannot state too strenuously how far we have come in this respect, the accumulated knowledge of generations of scientific minds has brought us to an extremely privileged place in history.

Things that even 50 years ago would have killed you are now quickly diagnosed and treated. My wife’s grandmother died as a direct result of undiagnosed and untreated coeliac disease in her early 50’s. A simple change of diet would have saved her.

In spite of having all of this knowledge we are killing ourselves with excess. This next generation may actually die before their parents unless they curb what they put into their bodies. Regardless of what advertising magnates tell us, we do not have the right to spoil ourselves continually with food or whatever it is they choose to foist upon our willing minds.

Difficulties have a way of focusing our minds if we are willing to let them. I am fully aware that many of us struggle to just live day to day and that piling anything on top can send it all crashing down.  That said, I am also a firm believer in the capacity of the human mind to embrace new things and become robust in ways that continually surprise.

My genetic lineage is not great.

When I reach the part of a medical questionnaire that asks about family history I usually need a separate sheet of paper. On both sides there is a long list of ailments and diseases that would all point to an early funeral.

So just after our marriage my wife and I did a medical clear out, we changed from sunflower to olive oil, cut out dairy, ate nothing after our evening meal and generally curtailed our intake. Over the years we have managed to maintain generally good health and keep on top of medical information and advances.

Even with these changes I was crippled with depression last year for the third time. The most recent was by far the worst and required medication to control the darkness and anxiety. Once stabilised it took utter determination and another change of diet, my wife researched what foods were good for a healthy mind and went for it.

I had gained 28 pounds and felt miserable.

Yet another change of diet and 8 months of determination removed this.

My faith in people was totally rocked at this time, my faith in God was also rocked because of the illness but has been slowly returning. One thing that I preached about when Pastoring was that self control in all areas of life is our aim.

Not being controlled by anything, but having control over everything.

I failed miserably at this on many occasions but still believe it to key to a balanced life.

Everyone has things they would love to be different able themselves, some just don’t admit it.

I believe in engaging our issues and finding a strategy to move forward. The human spirit is capable of great change, but obviously as a Christian I would attribute much of mine to prayer and power from God.

Regardless of whether we believe or not we need to get real with ourselves before anything will ever change.
