Torrential rain is always a challenge.
The weather today was like being in a rainforest without the trees, heat and exotic animals.
It was just cold and wet.
Very wet. Our old property isn’t a fan of the excessive water that the Victorian roof allows to flow down into the gutters either; I don’t know if they had less rain back then or just cared less. I suppose when our building went up gutters were a relatively rare thing on private dwellings, they had been the domain of the wealthy up to that point as urban streets had all manner of waste from livestock and poor plumbing slopping around on them.
With the gentrification of town centres came cobbled streets and trams, having waste water and rain pouring down on to Victorian pedestrians in their finery just simply wouldn’t do. So water, like so many Victorian era things, was hidden away in subterranean pipework and spirited away silently from the dwellings.
Driving to church this morning I was wishing we had a Lotus; in 1976 Roger More emerged from the ocean in a white Lotus having travelled some distance in the submersible convertible vehicle. The amount of surface water around was giving our Japanese model a fair run; however the good old traction control kept us going in the desired direction with four wheels firmly stuck to the road.
There are two services in the mornings and it would be fair to say that the early one is never really going to be an option for us. We manage to successfully all be up and out all week from 5am onwards. I am the first up and gone followed by the paper boy who manages admirably before school.
By the time we reach a Sunday the prospect of an early rise and rushed breakfast when there is a second option is not really applicable most weeks.
Ten years before our house was finished the church building we are attending began it’s services. So the much repaired roof still has the odd weak spot when the rain is falling like an ice bucket challenge (remember them?) For an extended period of time. By the time I had parked the car the family were seated and settled behind a row of young women; positioned on the seat next to one of them was a damp patch under a plastic tub which kept falling over. This wasn’t helped by the perpetual movement of it’s near neighbour.
Suitably late and dripping there arrived two movemberites with their caterpillar attachments grimly hanging on for the final days. It was soon apparent that moustache ‘a’ was intent on being near Miss wiggle and allowed his hairy friend to sort himself alternative seating elsewhere. All was going fine, the drips were contained and damp moustache was drying nicely.
Then something came over him; the prospect of being a seat width away from his amour for our young friend was too much to bear. He hastily arranged a jacket under him and one over his lap, this done the plastic pot was suitably positioned on his knee to catch the infiltrating rain. Finally all was well.
I did manage to focus on the sermon but Percy Sledge was playing on my inward gramophone.
The passion and obvious love playing out before me was a bonus lesson; our young friends unwittingly reminded this old dog of a younger day, I don’t envy them at all. That was a wonderful time, but this mature love is something that has been worth the journey.
It’s actually very complex in this full of activity life to listen news on TV,
thus I only use the web for that purpose, and get the
hottest information.
